Procedure Day
What to bring, what to expect, and how the day unfolds.

What to Bring

Photo ID and insurance card
List of current medications
Comfortable, loose-fitting clothing
Companion's name and phone number
Pacemaker or ICD card (if applicable)

Leave jewelry and contact lenses at home. Your companion must be at the facility โ€” procedure cancelled without one.

What to Expect

1
Check-in. Confirm identity, sign consent, nurse reviews your meds and prep.
2
Pre-procedure. Change into gown, IV placed for sedation and fluids.
3
Sedation. Usually propofol. You will be drowsy or fully asleep. You will not feel pain.
4
Procedure (30โ€“60 min). Camera examines entire colon. Polyps removed immediately if found.
5
Recovery (30โ€“60 min). Rest until sedation wears off. Doctor shares findings with your companion โ€” you may not remember.
โœ…
Recovery
What's normal, what's not, and when to call your doctor.

Normal After a Colonoscopy

Gas, bloating, and mild cramping (air was used to inflate the colon). Grogginess for the rest of the day. Small rectal bleeding for 1โ€“2 days if polyps were removed.

For 24 Hours โ€” Do NOT

Drive or operate machinery. Drink alcohol. Sign legal or financial documents (sedation impairs judgment).

Call your doctor or go to the ER if you have:

โ€ข Severe or worsening abdominal pain (not mild gas)
โ€ข Large rectal bleeding (more than a few tablespoons)
โ€ข Fever above 100.4ยฐF / 38ยฐC or chills
โ€ข Persistent nausea or vomiting
โ€ข Black, tarry stools
โ€ข Dizziness, fainting, chest pain, or difficulty breathing
Delayed bleeding from polypectomy can happen up to 1โ€“2 weeks later. If you see significant rectal bleeding days after, call your doctor immediately.

Results

No polyps โ†’ results final, next colonoscopy in ~10 years. Polyps removed โ†’ lab results in 1โ€“3 weeks; your doctor's office will call. Follow-up interval depends on findings (1โ€“3 years if advanced, 5โ€“7 if low-risk, 10 if normal).

That's everything.

The prep is the hard part. Colonoscopy prevents up to 68% of colorectal cancer deaths. You're doing something important.
